7 Ways to Get the Concert Tickets You're After

By Christine Ascher on October 20, 2017

Imagine that your favorite artist is coming to your city, and you absolutely have to go to their concert. But you didn’t find out about the concert soon enough, and when you go to buy tickets, it’s too late — everything is sold out. Or the only tickets available are being resold at exorbitant prices.

To avoid this disappointment, especially when it comes to popular artists who tend to attract a large audience, your best bet is to buy early. However, in order to be in a position to do so, you’ll have to be completely up-to-date on concerts and ticket sales dates. To stay in the loop and to make sure that you don’t miss out, try out these seven tricks.

1. Join the fan clubs for your favorite artists

One easy way to keep track of your favorite artists is by joining their fan club. You can typically join on the artist’s website, or on a ticket-seller site such as Ticketmaster. By signing up for a fan club, you’ll be notified about presale tickets for upcoming concerts, and you’ll receive a unique code to order them. You can also find out where and when your favorite artists will be performing so that you can determine the best date and location for you.

2. Research special deals with your credit card company

Another way to ensure that you have the opportunity to purchase presale tickets is through your credit card company. While not all credit card companies will offer these deals, several major ones such as American Express and Citi do. Start out by checking with your bank and learning about the options.

As a cardholder, you’ll be able to take advantage of presale opportunities for free; you can find out your presale code through the company’s website, and from there you can apply for tickets.

3. Sign up for your preferred artists’ mailing lists

If you just want to be notified of concert dates and the dates when regular tickets will be on sale, you can sign up for the mailing lists of some of your favorite artists on their websites. This will allow you to stay up-to-date on upcoming tours and performances so that you have the option of purchasing tickets right when they go on sale.

You’ll also be able to check the dates of different shows so that you can find one that’s convenient for you to attend before you have to actually commit to purchasing the tickets, and you’ll save yourself the trouble of having to constantly check their website to find out when more information becomes available.

4. Sign up for the mailing lists of venues near you

If you like attending concerts but are less particular in terms of the artists who you want to see, you can try signing up for the mailing list of a venue near you so that you’re always aware of the concerts being held there, and can purchase tickets if there are any that you particularly want to see.

This is a great way to ensure that you don’t miss out on any of your favorite artists without having to actually follow all of them individually — which could become time-consuming. It will also allow you to focus on attending the events that are convenient for you, rather than missing out on those tickets and having to go out of your way to see your favorite artists.

5. Use Google alerts

Another easy way to keep track of your favorite artists and nearby concert venues is through Google Alerts. Just set up an alert with an artist’s name or the name of a venue and the word “tickets” afterward, and you’ll be notified whenever a new link comes up relating to the keywords you’ve entered. This way, you will be one of the first to know when events are coming up and tickets are going on sale.

6. Use apps to help you find tickets

In addition to apps for ticket sellers such as Ticketmaster, there are also a lot of great options you can use to find out about events that you may be interested in with minimal trouble. For instance, the app Rukkus uses your location and music library to recommend upcoming events and lets you know important information such as price. Another great app for ticket-purchasing is StubHub, which allows you to search for specific events and purchase tickets through the app.

7. Become a Ticketmaster #VerifiedFan

#VerifiedFan is a system created by Ticketmaster to prevent scalpers and robots from buying up large amounts of tickets and driving up ticket prices for real fans. By registering as a #VerifiedFan for the artists you want to see, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase tickets directly rather than from a third-party seller who may increase the price.

While not all of those registered for the system will be able to receive tickets this way, given they have limited supplies, signing up will give you a greater chance of getting reasonably-priced tickets and will ensure that you’re aware of tour dates early on.
